June 24, 2010 is the last time I wrote something on this music blog? Well, as you can clearly see, the road to 140 songs stalled out at 47 tunes. The real life band, Ex-Replicas consuming most of my musical time over the past year. We released this record in January… and we’re recording our next record right now.
I’m going to re-invent this site soon… I don’t know if I’ll get back to doing the 140 project or not, but I’ll always be writing and recording and posting songs that hopefully you’ll enjoy listening too as much as I enjoy producing.
Well, it’s been just about a month and a half since posting the most recent song. It’s been a busy month recording and mixing the Ex-Replicas (Still to be named) CD. So while we sort out the naming business, it’s time to get back to writing and recording 140 tunes.
Which means time to put away the playing guitars and break out the writing guitars. So let me explain this. I have 6 electric guitars, and 2 acoustic guitars. And it seems the guitars I love to play, don’t give me songs. The guitar I get the most songs out of is a $300 Korean made Danelectro DC-59 Reissue. It’s made of Masonite, and has a metal nut. It stays in tune, that’s pretty much the nicest thing I can say about it from a playing perspective. But that doesn’t matter because, I don’t know how to explain this exactly, it has songs in it. Maybe it’s because the thing is a little awkward, and open E doesn’t sound as perfect as it does from other guitars, and therefore it forces me to try new ideas. Whatever works.
So there’s my secret, most of my musical inspiration is found in a $300 cardboard guitar.
we need a better plan with this, going on and trust me, you’ll know when to run it’s all we want and it’s a fact now the race has begun but this time we know the guns will shoot us up it’s all we want
Another collaboration with Mr. Mike Hoff on Drums brings some more experimental sounds born from my many confusing influences. This song is very very simple from concept to completion… two guitar parts, no bass, 1 vocal track and Mr. Hoff on Drums. The main guitar part comes as a result of tinkering with my delay pedal whilst bored and suffering from writers block, and finding an odd little combination of knobs that creates the strange analog “plucking” artifact that gives this song it’s identity. So don’t let anyone fool you… gear can inspire! Apologies to all the purists out there, I’m just not that talented.
This will probably be the last tune for a couple of weeks as Mike and I start recording the Ex-Replicas first full length “thing” this weekend… more on that when the time comes. Still a long way to go on this project, and I’m committed (read, ‘ought to be committed’) to write all 140 songs… no matter how long it takes… and at this rate, it will take quite some time.
So stay tuned for Ex-Replicas info and more 140 songs in the coming weeks.

it’s true, so true that I’m down and I’m wondering how how I got to now how I got to know how it feels to drown and what I have to go through to feel like you do
you know, you know how hard I’ve tried but you’re curious why why my hands are tied why my eyes are wide why I can’t decide who is on my side and why I can’t define
Anyone that knows me will tell you that I’m a person that thinks too much. So this song is really a stretch for me. I started writing it at 10pm, and I just finished recording it at 10:20pm. I didn’t think about what it means, or where it comes from, I just started banging on the acoustic guitar, (G and E, that’s all there is) and singing what immediately came to my lips.
I wrote it all down, headed to the studio and recorded 2 tracks, one acoustic guitar, and one vocal track. Mixed it for about 5 minutes and now I’m going to publish… it’s 10:36pm.
And there it is… not a whole lot of thinking, just a song… song 46.

... Is 140 Songs, all 140 seconds or less. My influences vary from all forms of rock; indie, alt, grunge, punk, I dig it. I also love bands that challenge the conventional, and that's what I'm trying to do here.I write and post new songs every week, so come back often and download some free music! -bp
